Kynar 500

Why Kynar 500?

Modern times have seen the rise of metal as a prime exterior material, largely due to its rugged durability, design versatility, and aesthetic possibilities. However, for all its bravado and beauty, metal tends to be superficially weak, and is generally available in but a single color. Thus, in order to be both functional and pleasing to the eye, metal must be coated with a unique finish which beautifies with color and resists any chalking, pitting, chipping, or premature aging.

Noted by architects around the world Kynar 500 PVDF resin-based coatings is precisely the product necessary to provide such protection and preservation to aluminum, galvanized steel, and aluminized steel. No other coating system withstands the rigors of nature and time like those based on Kynar 500® resins. This high-performance fluoropolymer resin, with its extraordinary capability to retain color and gloss, keeps metal looking vibrnt and appealing.

Over 45 years, finishes based on Kynar 500 PVDF resin have helped protect commercial, industrial, and residential buildings around the world. Kynar 500 is a special grade of PVDF resin used by licensed industrial paint manufacturers as the base resin in long-life coatings for aluminum, galvanized steel, and aluminized steel. Applications include metal roofing and siding, window and door frames, curtain wall and other miscellaneous metal trim and components.

Long Term Performance

Architects are using metal in all kinds of new and bold ways. Why? One reason is the high-performance chemistry behind Kynar 500 PVDF resin-based finishes. This performance can be used in many diverse applications, allowing architects to design in colorful palettes without losing color and gloss. Components, extrusions and preformed shapes can be bent, crimped and twisted to maximize form and function in defiance of blistering sun, humidity, urban grime, acid rain, corrosive salt and abrasion.

Facts About Coatings

The coating system, or paint, for metal panels is just as important as the substrate. For the life of the panel, the surface, or coating, will be exposed to environmental elements - ultraviolet sun rays, acid rain, dirt, etc. Over time, these environmental conditions will break down the coating resulting in panel fade and chalk.

Fade and chalk is not pleasing to the eye (see examples), and the degree of fade and chalk is directly related to the coating system. The post popular coatings for metal panels are Kynar 500, siliconized polyester, and polyester. Of the three, Kynar 500 coatings provide the best protection against fade and chalk while polyester coating provide the least protection.

Case Study: Taiyo Steel 1981 - 1995

In 1981, Taiyo Steel of Funabashi, Japan, made a test fence out of the south wall of a new plant they were building. They wanted to test the weatherability of Taiyo Steel’s precoated metal products. Fourteen years later, Kynar 500 resin-based coating was the only system that kept its original appearance.

Don't be fooled by polyester or silicone polyester paints. Kynar is the only quality option. The proof is in the fence!
